Stories: FAQs and How to Contribute
We have created our Stories blogging space to provide a new, accessible platform for LGBT people and their allies, friends, and family members to share their stories, experiences and views. As an organisation, we understand how important lived experiences and personal storytelling can be in changing perceptions, challenging stereotypes and tackling misinformation - we want this platform to facilitate that! We are particularly keen to hear from those who have a story to tell but are unable to access traditional media platforms.
We obviously can’t post and promote absolutely anything from absolutely anyone, and we have a process for publishing. So here’s some FAQs before you submit a piece to us:
WHAT CONTENT WILL YOU PUBLISH?
We will publish personal stories, long-reads, poetry and creative writing. We are particularly keen to provide space to those who are unable or unlikely to access traditional media platforms to share their stories, and we want to amplify unheard voices. We will only publish promotional pieces under certain circumstances (e.g. if you are organising a local Pride event) and there is a story behind the content.
WHAT CONTENT WON’T YOU PUBLISH?
We won’t publish anything which is offensive, promotes hate or discrimination, promotes or encourages illegal activity, defies safeguarding principles, or defames another individual or entity. We also won’t publish standard news articles or press releases, so please don’t send them to us! We will not publish anything which only promotes commercial or corporate enterprises. We will only publish re-posts under certain circumstances.
WILL YOU EDIT MY PIECE BEFORE IT GOES LIVE?
If necessary, we’ll do basic grammar and spelling correction. We may remove some content if there’s anything offensive included, but we won’t add anything. If you have included anyone’s real names in your piece, then we may request that you provide pseudonyms under certain circumstances. Whilst this is an open space for your words, we are a registered charity and not a media outlet - so please keep that in mind!
WHAT WILL HAPPEN WHEN MY PIECE GOES LIVE?
If your piece is approved then we will let you know when it has been published and email you with the live link. This will be shared on our social channels (Twitter, Facebook and Instagram) and with subscribers of our mailing list.
IS THERE A WORD COUNT?
No! Your piece can be as long or as short as you like. If it’s a personal story, we’d recommend sticking to less than 1000 words though.
CAN I REMOVE MY PIECE ONCE IT HAS BEEN PUBLISHED?
Yes, of course! Just email us with the link and we will take it down immediately.
WHAT ARE THE DISCLAIMERS?
If you are writing about anyone else (e.g. for a personal story) then you are responsible for seeking their permission to be included in your piece. If this cannot be obtained, please use pseudonyms or omit the information. We will not retain any publishing rights or ownership over the content you submit to us, and you will have the ability to re-post your content on another platform even if we have already published it. By submitting a piece, you agree that it can be published publicly and promoted where appropriate. If accepted, your piece will be published on our website and this is the only place that your content will be stored. We cannot be held responsible for any independent reaction to your piece. You can request that your piece be removed from our website and social channels at any point.
HOW DO I SUBMIT A PIECE FOR REVIEW?
Once you’ve finished your piece, email it to us at email@example.com and we will consider it for publishing. Please let us know your name or alias for author crediting and - if desired - your social media handles for public promotion. You can include a photograph if you want to, but there’s no obligation to do so!
